Final Movie Critique

Good Will Hunting

I chose to watch Good Will Hunting for my final project. This movie centered around Will Hunting: A college aged, janitor working at MIT. He is a mathematic genius but is faced with a troubled past and a fear of leaving behind what is familiar to him. The movie begins with Will easily solving an extremely difficult theory set by a professor(Gerry) in an attempt to encourage some friendly competition amongst his students. The professor realizes Will's talent and takes it upon himself to mentor him, despite his criminal record and standoffish nature. As a requirement from his parole officer, Will must also meet with a therapist, but finding one that would get through to him proves to be a struggle.  Finally, the professor brings Will to see an old college friend of his; A psychology professor who's unconventional approach to therapy is the only way that Will is able to truly confront his past.

I asked many of my friends and family to recommend a movie for me to watch before I started cinematography class as I am not a frequent movie watcher and have not watched many "classic" movies. Almost all of them recommended this movie and now I understand why. Every aspect of this movie is excellently planned and excellently executed. What possibly struck me the most about this movie was the authenticity of it. From the writing to the acting, nothing seemed artificial. The script of the movie didn't ever really seem like a script. The dialogue between the characters seemed to be just what it would be like in real life. The characters were not one dimensional or shallow, they were complex and well developed, and you could see an arch in almost all of them throughout the course of the movie. Everything in this movie flows really well also.

I personally loved how important moments from the movie were brought full circle in the ending. The most notable of these moments may be when Will leaves Sean a note saying "I have to go see about a girl"(reflecting a moment from one of their therapy sessions where Sean told Will the story about how he met his wife), and the moment when Chuckie walks up to Will's front door and sees that he is gone (Reflecting an important moment between him and Chuckie.
